George Bush is a draft dodger. A draft dodger is a person who illegally avoids obligatory military service. During the Viet Nam war, all young American men were required to serve in the armed forces. Many moved to Canada to avoid the draft. Some people could avoid the draft legally. For example, those with medical problems could waive their service. Also, those with political connections could serve in the National Guard, without leaving the US, as President Bush did. There has been much debate over whether George W. Bush fulfilled his required service, not only because he did not go to Viet Nam but also because many of the records detailing his service are missing. Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA, 2004 |
