Sappy is too sweet and sentimental - like the sweet sticky sap that comes out of trees in the spring here in New England that we use to make maple syrup. Yucky! (disgusting!) Here, it's used to describe two different movies - "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Happy Times." We often use "sappy" to describe books, movies, and love letters that are just too much.
