John Merrick two references - 1. Merrick, born in 1862, was called "the Elephant Man", because he suffered from a rare disease that made him look, well, kind of like an elephant 2. In the late eighties, Michael Jackson was falsely rumored to have paid a millions dollar for Merrick's bones. Note: In the live version of the song, the words are changed to John Davidson's remains. Actor and singer Davidson was very popular in the 1970s, but unlike Merrick, he is still alive and touring.
