Example: Normally, Bethany didn’t loan anyone her Porsche, but she made an exception for Martha, her ace boon coon.

You might think this new book’s title is about a marriage vow, but not exactly. Three successful African American women living in Los Angeles make a vow after a friend’s wedding that they will all get married within the year.
A homegirl, like the masculine homeboy and neutral homeslice, is someone from your neighborhood, especially an inner city neighborhood. A soror is a sorority sister. And although ace boon coon can be shortened to just boon coon, watch out! Unlike this friendly term, coon alone is a derogatory word for African Americans.
As to whether Trista and her friends manage to get married by their self-imposed deadline, I haven’t gotten that far in the book—the quote comes from the first page! But since I picked it up from the seven day loan shelf at the library yesterday, I’ll have to find out by next week. Send me an email then if you can’t stand the suspense.
