Definition: (noun) a religious fundamentalist (derogatory)

Example: When Janice announced that she was planning to major in evolutionary biology, her fundie parents refused to pay her tuition.

Quote:

“It was the fire-breathing Mary Matalin, when she was working in George the Elder’s 1992 loser of a campaign, who noted that Bill Clinton was hounded by ‘bimbo eruptions.’ George W. Bush, it may then be said, is pestered by ‘fundie eruptions.’ Every now and then, just when the Bushies are beginning to look somewhat civilized on social issues, a shadowy Bush/Christian-right plot lurches forth from the darkness, like a crazy old uncle pushing his way down from the attic.”
- Columnist Michelangelo Signorile in the New York Press

In the US, whether or not to teach creationism and/or intelligent design alongside evolution in public high schools has been a major controversy. Fundamentalist groups support alternatives being included and many would like to see evolution taken out of the classroom altogether.

One of the strangest things to come out of this debate is the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), a “religion” that was invented to protest the teaching of intelligent design. Its website claims that the universe was created by a deity made of pasta.

It also explains that global warming was not caused by pollution, but instead was brought on by the decline in the number of pirates living on the earth. FSM believers, who dress in pirate costumes, are called pastafarians. While the site presents compelling evidence supporting the pirate theory, the alternative theory has yet to be taught in any school systems.
