Definition: (noun) an illegal drink favored by rappers, made from prescription cough syrup (containing codeine) and fruit flavored soda, mixed with alcohol and/or Jolly Ranchers candy

Example: “Don’t you know Caipirinhas are last year’s cocktail?” said Sally, drinking sizzurp from a Styrofoam cup outside the nightclub.

Quote:

“Somebody ordered pancakes, I just sip the sizzurp
That right there could drive a sane man bizzurp.”
- Kanye West in the 2002 song Through the Wire

West’s interest in sizzurp’s painkilling properties is understandable. His jaw had just been broken in a car accident and was wired shut at the time he recorded that song. The drink was also favored by DJ Screw, mentioned in last week’s newsletter, and it may have contributed to his death.

The toxic beverage originated in Texas and is also called drank. As you may have guessed from the lyrics above, the word syrup becomes sizzurp and berserk turns into bizzurp, in the same way that the better known expression for shizzle comes from for sure.

Last year, rappers Jim Jones and Cam’ron decided to cash in on its popularity by introducing a new drink called Sizzurp Purple Punch Liquor, which Jones says tastes like grape Kool-Aid. Available at your neighborhood liquor store, it will undoubtedly rot your teeth just as much as the real thing, though I imagine it doesn’t have quite the same kick without the codeine.
