Although 50 Cent refers to his Benz (Mercedes), his BM (BMW) and his Range (Range Rover) in the song Poor Lil Rich, the most popular whips in music videos these days are lowriders, sometimes called low ridas.
These specialty cars, cut down to hug the ground, have been hip for decades. In the 1950s, when this fad began in Southern California, drivers solved the problem of getting over obstacles like railroad tracks by adding hydraulic systems that raised the car body. This tended to make it bounce a bit as they drove along.
These days, the emphasis is on the bouncing – the more the better, as shown in these lyrics from Q-Tip’s Moving With U: “I wanna put flames to you sincerely, make your box-spring jump like a low rida.” While lowrider is obviously a descriptive, it's also related to ride, another synonym for car. Unlike whip, which has only recently come into use, ride has been around since the 1930s.
By the way, for those of you who don’t live in the States, Cool Whip is fake whipped cream, and for futon users, the box spring is what we put under the mattress.
